Manufacturing is vital to the future economic prosperity of the UK and Lombard has partnered with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)
to support and promote UK manufacturing businesses from SMEs through to large corporate companies.
Lombard is a proud partner of the IMechE's Manufacturing Excellence (MX) programme, which provides support to all UK-based manufacturers, no matter their size,
age or area of expertise.
An Introduction to MX
The Manufacturing Excellence Awards, run by the IMechE, is a not for profit business improvement programme that supports and promotes manufacturers in the UK.
Wherever you are in the UK, whatever your industry sector or company size, with the Manufacturing Excellence Awards, you can access high-quality consultancy
completely free of charge. The programme is free-to-enter, and offers immediate and relevant business advice.
The new online assessment tool takes three to four hours to complete. Participants have said:
Simply going through the assessment process is a valuable learning experience. The questions challenge you to think about your business in different ways.
Benefits of the Manufacturing Excellence Awards
- Companies can use the assessment process as an internal benchmarking tool
- The feedback report highlights where companies are succeeding as well as those areas that need attention
- The Manufacturing Excellence Awards are free to enter
- Shortlisted companies receive a visit from a team of MX Assessors, comprising IMechE members and other industry experts. At the end of the visit, the
team provide advice and feedback on what they have seen
How the Business Improvement Programme Works
Businesses are invited to conduct an in-depth self assessment audit of their processes and strategy. Once completed, companies receive a complimentary benchmark
report that identifies their strengths and weaknesses and makes recommendations for improvement.

The best of UK manufacturing is something to celebrate and, as such, companies who complete at least one module of the business improvement programme are eligible
to enter into the selection process for the annual MX Awards.
The Awards culminate in a prestigious ceremony that brings together over 350 manufacturing industry professionals. In the past this event has been held at
The Dorchester Hotel and hosted by people including Alastair Campbell, Vince Cable and Andrew Marr.
Manufacturing Excellence also provides a platform for networking among industry experts through the MX Club.
MX Club events
take place throughout the year, are open to all and are usually free to attend. The calendar includes industrial visits, workshops and lectures.
These events are a perfect opportunity to share best practice methods, network with industry specialists and learn from world class companies.
